GENERAL PREFACE

Table of ContentsThis series of monographs has been planned to supply visitors to thegreat English Cathedrals with accurate and well illustrated guide-booksat a popular price. The aim of each writer has been to produce a workcompiled with sufficient knowledge and scholarship to be of value to thestudent of Archaeology and History, and yet not too technical inlanguage for the use of an ordinary visitor or tourist.

To specify all the authorities which have been made use of in each casewould be difficult and tedious in this place. But amongst the generalsources of information which have been almost invariably found usefulare:—(1) the great county histories, the value of which, especially inquestions of genealogy and local records, is generally recognised; (2)the numerous papers by experts which appear from time to time in theTransactions of the Antiquarian and Archaeological Societies; (3) theimportant documents made accessible in the series issued by the Masterof the Rolls; (4) the well-known works of Britton and Willis on theEnglish Cathedrals; and (5) the very excellent series of Handbooks tothe Cathedrals originated by the late Mr John Murray; to which thereader may in most cases be referred for fuller detail, especially inreference to the histories of the respective sees.

EDWARD F. STRANGE,
Editors of the Series.

AUTHOR'S PREFACE

The task of writing a monograph, on such an essentially Norman Cathedralas Norwich, has been most pleasing to one who owns to an especialfondness for that sturdy architecture which was evolved in Englandduring one of her stormiest epochs—from the end of the eleventh tillthe end of the twelfth century.

I would here acknowledge indebtedness and thanks due to the Very Rev.the Dean and Mrs Sheepshanks for the personal interest they evinced, andfor his material help; to Mr J.B. Spencer, the sub-sacrist, for thathelp which his intimate association with the cathedral enabled him tooffer; and to Mr S.K. Greenslade for the loan of the drawings reproducedunder his name; as well as to the Photochrom Co. Ltd., Messrs S.B. Bolas& Co., and Mr F.G.M. Beaumont for the use of their photographs. Theviews of the cathedral as it appeared in the early part of thenineteenth century are reproduced from Britton's "Norwich," and from avolume by Charles Wild.
