AUTHOR'S PREFACE.
QUINCY ADAMS SAWYER'S
only title was plain "Mr." His ancestorswere tradesmen, merchants, lawyers, politicians, and Presidents. He, too, was proudof his honored ancestry, and I have endeavoredin this book to have him live up toan ideal personification of gentlemanly qualitiesfor which the New England standardshould be fully as high as that of OldEngland; in fact, I see no reason why theheroes of American novels, barring the singlematter of hereditary titles, should not comparefavorably as regards gentlemanly attributeswith their English cousins across theseas.
