PREFACE.
In response to numerous requests from almostevery country in which English is spoken, we havemuch pleasure in presenting to the public this thefirst English-Esperanto Dictionary. The demands forsuch a work became so pressing that it was absolutelynecessary to issue it as quickly as possible. Wereit not for this urgency we would have waited untilthe larger Dictionary was ready, but the knowledgethat the progress of Esperanto would bematerially checked or retarded decided us to issuethis smaller one. The compiling of a Dictionaryis always a difficult task, but the difficulty is increasedin a very great degree when an initial and originalwork is undertaken. Such a work demands careful andthorough research, absolute precision, and much patientlabour. The labour, however, has been lightened by
